OFFICE OF THE DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING

Announcement

Dear Stakeholders,

In the past, ODHH would consult with the advisory committee about its’ annual budget including FY10. Last February 2009, the advisory committee has since been abolished per the Executive Order 09-02 signed by Governor Gregoire. For the FY11 draft budget, this year ODHH is posting on the website for public comments. The first document is to give you background about the how we budget, the budget process, and what services or expenditures we are funding. It also explains the impact of the Governor’s 2010 Supplemental Budget. The second document is the budget itself. The deadline to send public comments is Wednesday January 27th at rafferic@dshs.wa.gov. Please feel free to email any questions or feedback.

Announcement

Center on Childhood Deafness and Hearing Loss (CDHL) was established recently with passage of HB1879 during the 2009 legislative session. CDHL is an ‘umbrella agency’ that includes WA School for the Deaf. Per HB 1879, CDHL is hosting stakeholder meetings to gather public opinion about deaf education in the public school systems. More information about CDHL and HB 1879 here http://www.wsd.wa.gov/cdhl/news/default.html. A Message from the Director

I want to take the opportunity to thank my staff, presenters, Department of Information Services, participants and webcast viewers for making the first symposium a huge overall success! They symposium was organized to briefly celebrate ODHH’s 30 year history and discuss six specific topics where an open exchange of feedback was encouraged. Your feedback is important to me and ODHH’s partners. If you attended but have not completed an evaluation form for any of the session(s), please take an opportunity to download the evaluation form and return to my attention. If you have additional feedback, please email me at rafferic@dshs.wa.gov

Resolving the barriers and unmet needs of underserved niche populations: deaf, hard of hearing and deaf-blind requires not a one-day event but ongoing partnerships and communications with all affected stakeholders. It will take not a day, week, month or year to accomplish everything we aim to do but we will one day look back and say, together we made a difference!

Eric Raff; Director
WA Office of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
