Acute Mental Health Care
Acute care is provided in emergency situations where an individual is gravely disabled or is likely to do serious harm to self or others as a result of a mental illness. Acute psychiatric inpatient treatment is provided in a community hospital or a certified freestanding Evaluation and Treatment facility. The purpose of acute psychiatric hospitalization is to evaluate, diagnose and stabilize acute symptoms and is of very short duration. A determination of medical necessity is made by the RSN/PHIP for publicly funded services. For publicly funded services, call the RSN crisis line and request an evaluation.
