Washington's Mental Health State Hospitals

Facilities

Child Study and Treatment Center

The Child Study and Treatment Center is located on the grounds of Western State Hospital in Lakewood. Center staff provide medical, psychological, behavioral assessment, and treatment services to youth with disabling mental disorders.

About 45 children are resident patients at the center, which provides care 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Treatment services are also provided to 14 day patients who attend Clover Park School District classes at the facility.

The center operates on an annual budget of $7.7 million with 135 full-time equivalents* (FTE). There are three residential cottages. Each cottage is roughly divided by age, from 6-10 years, 11-14 years, and 15-17 years. The Administration Building adjoins Oak Grove Elementary School, and there is a high school building, Fir Grove High School.

Children are referred for treatment through the Children's Long-Term Inpatient Program (CLIP) committee. Referrals come from statewide sources, usually when all other treatment programs have failed. There is a fairly constant waiting list of potential admissions, and virtually all CSTC patients are Medicaid eligible.

Eastern State Hospital

Eastern State Hospital is a fully-accredited psychiatric hospital that provides inpatient psychiatric services for people with acute and chronic mental illness, offenders with mental illness, and geriatric patients.

The hospital, located in the city of Medical Lake in Spokane County, has a capacity of 319 patients that are cared for by 692 FTEs*.

Out of an annual budget of $40 million, about $36 million is for payroll.

Mental health treatment and care has improved dramatically since Eastern State Hospital was founded in 1891. Today, the hospital has the all-encompassing mission to provide mental health care and education to the citizens of eastern Washington.

The hospital has fully implemented mental health reform over the past decade to integrate its services with the community it serves.

Western State Hospital

Western State Hospital, in Lakewood, is the second oldest state institution, founded in 1871. The hospital now includes 56 buildings with 32 wards on 264 acres. It is the largest state-operated psychiatric hospital west of the Mississippi River.

There are three clinical units: the Center for Adult Services (CAS) serving individuals civilly committed under the state's Involuntary Treatment Act, the Center for Geriatric Services (CGS) for assessment and treatment of individuals 60 years of age and above, and the Center for Forensic Services (CFS) serving court-committed individuals who have special security needs.

The hospital operates on a budget of $116.4 million a year with 1,984 FTEs*. It houses a patient population of approximately 1,005, including 130 residents in the Program For Assisted Living Skills (PALS) unit located on the grounds.
