Orientation & Pre-Service Training

To become a licensed foster parent, you must complete the following training requirements:

Training Requirements

• Orientation - You must attend an orientation session in person or view orientation videos and take an orientation quiz.
• Pre-service Training - You are required to take 30 hours of Pre-service Training and a First Aid/CPR and Blood Born Pathogens course.

Ongoing Training

All licensed family foster homes (including private agency, Children's Administration and licensed relative homes) are required to complete 36 hours of ongoing training during each three year licensing period.

A certificate of completion is available for all Training Options below:

• Classroom Training (no online confirmation needed)
• Video Training
• Interactive Training (4 hours credit for all modules).
• Practice Notes, from the N.C. Division of Social Service and Children's Resource Program (2 hours credit).
• Northwest Institute for Children and Families, University of Washington School of Social Work - provides research summaries and articles. Complete your certificate of completion after reading an article.
