March 25, 2009Thank you for attending our Spring Conference, "In All Fairness: "Working with minority youth and youth in poverty to transform the juvenile justice system" March 19-20, Holiday Inn, SeaTac WA.
Over 300 people attended the annual conference “In All Fairness: working with minority youth and youth in poverty to transform the juvenile justice system”. It addressed the interaction of Disproportionate Minority Contact (DMC) in the juvenile justice system, juvenile detention alternatives, and poverty. The goal of the conference was to lay the foundation to begin understanding the interaction of race, culture and poverty, and how these factors drive/influence decision making in the juvenile justice system; further, to examine how we (as decision makers) are influenced by our own race, culture and socio economic status and what that means - and how we move into action around these issues.
Guest speakers included James Bell, Dr. Donna Beegle, Dr. Jorge Partida, Father Boyle, and Johnny Lake. Thank you to all who attended and provided GJJAC with suggestions and valuable feedback that will be utilized in the planning of the next conference to be held in October 2010.
The conference was co-sponsored by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, Center for Children & Youth Justice, the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Programs (OJJDP), and the DSHS Juvenile Rehabilitation Administration.
