ODHH Symposium
Past, Present, Future

1979-2009

Friday November 13, 2009

A Message from the Director

I want to take the opportunity to thank my staff, presenters, Department of Information Services, participants and webcast viewers for making the first symposium a huge overall success! The symposium was organized to briefly celebrate ODHH’s 30 year history and discuss six specific topics where an open exchange of feedback was encouraged.   Here you will find materials from the ODHH Symposium including a link to the webcast video, the Power Point presentations and edited real-time captioning transcripts.

Ongoing communications and partnerships with various state agencies and stakeholders are essential to removing barriers and address the unmet needs of underserved niche populations: deaf, hard of hearing and deaf-blind. It will take not a day, week, month or year to accomplish everything we aim to do but we will one day look back and say, together we made a difference!   Should you have any feedback, please contact me rafferic@dshs.wa.gov

Sincerely,
Eric Raff; ODHH Director

 Webcast

Working with Department of Information Systems, ODHH set a ground-breaking precedent in accessible Washington state government webcasting.     The webcast included audio & video, PowerPoint presentations, captioning and sign language interpreters.     The symposium was webcast live on the internet including two breakout sessions: Education and Employment. The estimated number of connections is between 400-450 connections, people logging in to watch the keynote speakers.   Unfortunately, the broadcasting was disrupted during the ‘Education’ session which was resolved in time for the ‘Employment’ session with 50 connections.   The webcast video does have the entire 6 hours event. To watch the archived webcast, please click on this link.  For webcast information and instructions please check here.

* Transcripts – Communication Access Real-time Translation (CART) providers were at each of the breakout sessions to provide real-time captioning projected on a screen to facilitate communication accessibility.   Captioning transcripts are available however it is not a verbatim record of the proceedings.  Captioning providers relied on sign language interpreters who were speaking for American Sign Language users.  Misunderstandings, typos and errors do occur.   Transcripts for sessions without webcast have been edited to correct minor typos and errors.     Transcripts for sessions with webcast have not been edited.

** Webcast - Video captioning is not the same as the transcript.  The transcript was provided by an on-site CART provider and captioning in webcast video was provided by a remote captioning provider.   The unedited captioning transcript from on-site CART provider is available under “Transcript” however it is not a verbatim record of the proceedings.
