Governor Gregoire presents first annual Spirit of Youth Award

Governor Gregoire presented Jessica Davila, of Forks (Clallam County), with the 2007 Spirit of Youth Award on September 17, 2007. The Governor's Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee (GJJAC) initiated this award earlier this year to celebrate a young adult who, by overcoming personal obstacles and serving his or her community, exemplifies the importance of the rehabilitative focus of the juvenile justice system as well as the power of personal achievement. The presentation took place in Governor Gregoire's office, in the presence of Ms. Davila's family, friends, and representatives of the Governor's Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee (GJJAC).

Ms. Janice O'Mahony, Chair of the GJJAC, affirmed "today we honor Jessica Davila as a shining example of a young person who has turned her life around through determination, character, and hard work." The Westend Outreach program with the Forks Hospital, Ms. Davila's employer and award nominator stated "Jessica has served as an example of what it truly means to overcome adversity, and to give back what she has learned to the community."
