Olympia -- DSHS Statement regarding Harrison family, deaths of children April 4, 2009, Harrison children: Maxine, Jayme, Samantha, Heather and James.
The news stories of the children's murder prompted Children's Administration to begin a full review of any records on this family.
We confirm that Children's Administration had prior periodic involvement with the Harrison family, with five referrals from 2001 - 2007. The latest referral to Child Protective Services regarding the family was in February, 2007.
Referrals on the family came from mandatory reporters. Mandatory reporters include those whose jobs require them to report suspected abuse such as nurses, doctors, school employees and state workers.
Most of the referrals focused on concerns of neglect; which, after investigation, were determined to not meet the legal definition of abuse or neglect, and the family was referred to services in the community. The February 2007 referral was determined to be abuse, and community services were offered.
Children's Administration will be cooperating fully with law enforcement in their investigation.
If people suspect a child is being neglected or abused, or parents or caregivers need help to prevent or stop abuse, call the state number 1-866-ENDHARM (1-866-363-4276).
