Olympia -- In the world of long-term care, family caregivers are often referred to as "unsung heroes." These heroes will be honored during the family caregiver training conference, "Challenges in Caregiving: Giving Care, Taking Care," scheduled for June 1 at the Tukwila Community Center, 12424 42nd Avenue South.
Dr. Vicki Rackner, surgeon, writer, national speaker and family caregiver, is this year's keynote speaker. She will share the stage with Art Thiel, sports columnist for the Seattle P-I. They bring their personal and professional perspectives on caregiving, sharing lessons they've learned along the way to help others find hope in the sometimes overwhelming day-to-day tasks of caregiving.
The event is sponsored by the Department of Social and Health Services' Aging and Disability Services Administration and ElderHealth Northwest, along with the support of numerous community organizations.
The conference is designed to provide current, practical skills and resources that community caregivers can use daily when caring for family members. The conference is intended for, but not limited to, family caregivers, in-home caregivers, adult family home providers, and adult day care or assisted living facility staff.
Caregivers can choose from 18 widely ranging workshops, including:
