Not for public announcement – for media invitation only

OLYMPIA -- On April 24 the Children's Administration Region 5 Division of Children and Family Services, in partnership with Mary Bridge Children's Hospital and Health Center and Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, will discuss the results of a study of Pierce County abuse-related child fatalities in a forum with community partners. Those attending the meeting will work in groups to discuss the findings and plan next steps, including identifying existing efforts under way and services and supports the community needs to marshal to prevent abuse and abuse-related fatalities in the future.

The study was prompted by four 2008 abuse-related child fatalities in Pierce County. The study included review of 300 child fatalities that occurred in Pierce County from 2000-2007; 37 of those deaths were homicides and 18 of the homicides involved child abuse. This review assessed a broad range of community and other factors that could influence abuse-related child deaths. Family risk factors and geographic analysis of child-abuse-related fatalities were considered, providing a framework for community solutions and actions.
