OLYMPIA – Following a nationwide search, Kelly Cunningham has been promoted to superintendent of the McNeil Island Special Commitment Center in the DSHS Health and Recovery Services Administration. He assumes the post on Aug. 1.
Cunningham has 11 years of experience in Washington state's nationally-recognized SCC treatment program for civilly committed sex offenders, rising from front-line staff to key management positions.
Director of Mental Health Systems Richard Kellogg said Cunningham’s knowledge and understanding of all SCC programs makes him the perfect choice.
"Kelly has a proven record working with SCC residents, staff, stakeholders, the courts and the public," said Kellogg. "His skills are perfectly suited to deal with both existing and future challenges."
Thanking Director Kellogg for the opportunity to lead the SCC, Cunningham said, "I look forward to working collaboratively with staff members to provide residents with appropriate treatment opportunities in a manner that preserves public safety."
Cunningham, who holds a dual master's degree from The Evergreen State College, most recently held the position of SCC Community Programs Administrator. Prior to that, he was the SCC's Chief Operating Officer.
The Special Commitment Center has a population of 298 residents living in the secure facility on McNeil Island, two transition facilities on the island and in Seattle, and in community-based housing.
Cunningham replaces Interim Superintendent Don Gauntz who was not a candidate for the permanent position. Gauntz took over after Superintendent Henry Richards returned to private practice in late May.
