Refugee Special Employment Needs Project
The federal Office of Refugee Resettlement awards the Targeted Assistance Discretionary Grant to fund services to refugees that lead to self sufficiency. Washington is one of 22 states receiving this two year grant for 2011-2013. This grant is referred to as the Refugees with Special Employment Needs (RSEN) Project.
For the first year, RSEN is specifically targeting Refugee Cash Assistance (RCA) recipients and former RCA recipients who are still within 18 months from their date of arrival to the U.S.
Emphasis for RSEN includes providing opportunities for refugees to gain work experience through subsidized employment and other work experience opportunities with employers. Service providers also offer intensive customized case management, work readiness training, job placement, and job retention services.
In addition, providers offer support services to participants to help with transportation, tools, work clothing, as well as other retention services to ensure their transition to employment goes smoothly.
