Introduction

Human subject protections training is required every three years for:

  • Investigators and Co-Investigators
  • All research staff who have contact with human subjects or identifiable records
  • WSIRB Members
  • WSIRB Staff

Initial or continuing study approval cannot be granted until the training coordinator receives confirmation that the required training has been successfully completed by the investigator and co-investigator. Other research staff may not have contact with human subjects or identifiable records until training has been successfully completed.

Approved Training Courses

Researchers may complete a human subject protections training course through their home institution and provide the Training Coordinator a copy of the certificate of completion.

Alternatively, WSIRB staff recommend the web-based human subject protections training provided by CITI. Please register under Washington State Government Agencies. When the training coordinator has been notified of successful training completion, your name will be posted on the Washington State Agency List of Training Participants.

Continuing Education Requirements

Investigators and co-investigators conducting research are required to update their human subject protections training every three years.

To fulfill the re-training requirements, WSIRB staff recommend the web-based human subject protections REFRESHER training provided by CITI. Please register under Washington State Government Agencies. The CITI Refresher course takes approximately 1.5 hours to complete.

Researchers may also successfully complete an additional human subject protections training course through their home institution and provide the Training Coordinator with a copy of the certificate of completion.
