Pregnant Women Assistance (PWA) Program

What it is:

Pregnant Women Assistance (PWA) is a state funded program that provides cash assistance to low-income pregnant individuals who are not eligible for the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or State Family Assistance (SFA) program for a reason other than not cooperating with TANF program rules.

This  program provides a maximum monthly cash grant of $197.

Who is eligible:

Individuals residing in Washington state who:

  • Are pregnant;
  • Meet income and resource requirements; and
  • Meet citizenship / alien status requirements.

You cannot get PWA if you:

  • Are eligible for the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) or State Family Assistance (SFA) program;
  • Refuse or fail to meet a TANF or SFA eligibility rule;
  • Do not participate in substance use disorder treatment (when required) without good cause; or
  • Are eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.
