Continuing Education (CE)

The Washington Administrative Code Section 388-03-160 requires all DSHS certified and authorized interpreters and translators to earn and report continuing education credits.

For those who were certified/authorized BEFORE 04/06/2015:

  • Your certification or authorization expires or renews on 04/06/2019.
  • You must accumulate all 20 credits between 01/01/2015-04/06/2019.
  • Your first ethics credit needs to be completed AND submitted before 12/31/2016.
  • You must submit 4 credits of ethics (these count toward the 20 total) before your certification or authorization expiration date:
    • One ethics per calendar year:
      • 2015/2016/2017/2018 OR
      • 2016/2017/2018/2019
  • Once your certificate or authorization is renewed, you'll need to complete this cycle again. New expiration dates will be based off the issue date of your recertification/reauthorization. Please note that there is no exclusive translator ethics training. The annual ethics training credit will apply to medical interpreters, social service interpreters, and translators.

For those certified/authorized after 4/6/2015 your certificate expires or renews four years from your certification/authorization date. You will also need to accumulate 20 continuing education credits, including four ethics credits (which count toward your 20 total) gained one per year, prior to your expiration date. Once your certificate or authorization is renewed, you'll need to complete this cycle again.
