Continuing Education (CE)

For those who were certified/authorized BEFORE 04/06/2015:

  • Your certification or authorization expires 04/06/2019.
  • You must accumulate all 20 credits between 01/01/2015-04/06/2019.
  • Your first ethics credit needs to be completed AND submitted before 12/31/2016.
  • You must submit 4 credits of ethics before your certification or authorization expiration date:
    • One ethics per calendar year:
      • 2015/2016/2017/2018 OR
      • 2016/2017/2018/2019 
  • Once your certificate or authorization is renewed, you'll need to complete this cycle again. New expiration dates will be based off the issue date of your recertification/reauthorization.

For those certified/authorized after 4/6/2015 your certificate expires four years from your certification/authorization date unless you accumulate 20 continuing education credits, including four ethics credits gained one per year, prior to your expiration date. Once your certificate or authorization is renewed, you'll need to complete this cycle again.

How do I submit credits to LTC?

  • I attended an online DSHS-approved activity.
    • Email the following: 
      1. Proof of completion (usually a certificate).
      2. The certificate of completion must contain the DSHS approval number (found under the List of DSHS Approved Continuing Education Activities below), the name of the trainer(s) as listed under Provider/Trainer, the approval date, the activity/class date, and the number of credits. Note: Any activity/class date over one year from the approval date will not be honored for credits.
      3. Include ALL your alphanumeric certification/authorization numbers (ex: MAxxxx, MCxxxx, SAxxxx, SCxxxx, TCxxxx) in the body of the email.
  • I attended an in-person DSHS approved activity.
    • Your credits will be reported by the activity host or organization via a sign-in sheet, which is provided by LTC.
    • Include ALL your alphanumeric certification/authorization numbers (ex: MAxxxx, MCxxxx, SAxxxx, SCxxxx, TCxxxx) in the sign-in sheet.

How do I find out how many CE credits I have? 

We have a database that allows you to check how many credits you have accumulated so far! See this document to see what type of information it gives you: how to interpret CE tracking data.

To access this database: 

  • Click on the CE Tracking link.
  • Click on Find Continuing Education Credit Status.
  • Enter either: 
    • Name
      • You will be able to see all your certificates if you enter your name only; Or
    • Certificate number
      • if you have multiple certificates, you'll have to check one by one.
  • TIP: double click on the "search" button.

How do I know if the CE activity I attended is approved by DSHS?

  • The link below is a record of  ALL approved continuing education activities for interpreters and translators. It includes upcoming in-person activities; upcoming online activities; approved web activities available 24/7; and previous activities approved by DSHS. Please note that courses must be completed within one year of the listed approval date. Please look through the entire list as some courses have been re-approved but may be located at the bottom or middle of the list.

      • One ethics activity counts for all certifications/authorization you hold, please let LTC know all your credentials when you email the proof of completion.

        • Please view the appropriate orientation video. Upon finishing the video, complete the quiz, linked below the video. To log onto the quiz, input the requested information completely (first name, last name, and certificate number). The quiz site will have instructions regarding how to submit scores to LTC.
    • Free new interpreter orientation: available for ONE (1) credit.
      • If you ONLY have a medical certificate/authorization, please complete the MEDICAL interpreter orientation.
      • If you ONLY have a social services certificate/authorization, please complete the SOCIAL SERVICE interpreter orientation.
      • If you ONLY have a translator certificate, please complete the SOCIAL SERVICE interpreter orientation.
      • IF YOU HAVE MULTIPLE certificates/authorizations, please complete the MEDICAL interpreter orientation.
        • One orientation counts for all certifications/authorization you hold, please let LTC know all your credentials when you email the proof of completion.
