The Adult Corrections Release Stipend Program was authorized by Substitute House Bill 561 on August 9, 1971 and was implemented on April 1, 1972. This program was set up to include all prisoners released after April 1, 1972 and those released during the 26 weeks prior to the project's implementation. The basic purpose of the program is to provide financial support to all persons leaving the Washington State Adult Correctional Institutions and needing such support during their period of transition from institutional living to community living. The Stipend Project is now at the stage where clerical computation is becoming inadequate for the amount of data that has accumulated. We are in the process of placing the Stipend Program data into a computerized system which should facilitate the extraction and manipulation of the data for use in future reports. This report is the first in a series which will periodically describe project findings as they become available.
