What does a Direct Support Professional do?

Direct Support Professionals work with  adults in the individual’s home and in the community. A DSP follows a detailed care plan guided by the individual that describes the daily support needs and the goals the individual would like to accomplish. Based on the individual’s needs and desires, the DSP provides the individual with a safe living environment, help with daily tasks, and teaches them life skills in areas such as:

  • Menu planning and cooking
  • Shopping
  • Bill paying
  • Social activities
  • Hygiene
  • Medical appointments and medication management
  • Service planning and goal setting
  • Creating meaningful connections with others
  • Opportunities for advancement.
  • Ability to receive on the job training and continuing education like others working in the same profession.
  • Making a difference in the lives of others.
  • Creating a more inclusive and diverse community.
