Personal Care Limitation Extension Process

Overview

The Limitation Extension process allows you to ask for more personal care hours to correct, improve or prevent a worsening condition. It’s for people under age 21 who are eligible for personal care.

A Limited Extension is only authorized if your need exceeds what was authorized by:

  • Your DDCS CARE Assessment; and
  • An Exception to Rule.

A Limitation Extension comes after requesting an ETR.

How to Make a Request

You or your legal representative can ask for a Limitation Extension by sending a written request. Include any documentation that you believe will show your need for additional hours.

Required Documentation:

  • An explanation of the hours you need to complete your Activities of Daily Living and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living.
  • Documentation of the supports available to you over the course of a week; and
  • An explanation of why informal supports are not available to meet your needs.

To request a Limitation Extension packet, email LEcommittee@dshs.wa.gov. Please include the client’s name, address and your contact information.

Eligibility

You can request a Limitation Extension if:

  • You have already asked for an ETR for personal care and received a DDCS ETR decision; or,
  • More than 30 calendar days have passed since you asked for an ETR, and you have not received a decision.

The LE Committee may ask you for more information. They may also ask for an in-home review of your functional abilities by an occupational therapist or another qualified medical professional.

When the LE Committee makes their decision, you will receive a Planned Action Notice. The PAN will explain the decision. If you disagree with the decision, you have the right to an administrative hearing.
