The incidence of reported cases of child maltreatment in Washington State has been increasing steadily since 1979. By August 1984, Child Protective Services (CPS) was opening approximately 2,600 new family cases each month, for an annual projected total of some 31,000 families. One problem that this demand for services presents to program managers concerns the process of allocating resources, including staff, effectively to different areas of the state. The overall purpose of this project is to provide a means for predicting the reported incidence of physical and sexual maltreatment for the counties of Washington State, using social and economic data from the 1980 U.S. Census and other sources. This information provides a basis for evaluating staff needs and other resources throughout the state.
