The Washington State First Steps program has expanded Medicaid services and eligibility for pregnant women with incomes less than 185% of the Federal Poverty level. Undocumented pregnant women are not eligible for prenatal care through Medicaid although their deliveries and infant care are covered by Medicaid. A state-funded program has extended prenatal services to undocumented women. Services for undocumented pregnant women became available in 12 high impact counties in late 1989 and early 1990. By September 1990, the number of women enrolled in this program for undocumented women exceeded projected numbers by more than two-fold. This report is based on the most recent data available from the First Steps Database for births from January through June 1990.
