August is Child Support Awareness Month

OLYMPIA- Child Support Awareness Month is when we remind all parents that children thrive when family members meet their emotional and financial needs. The Department of Social and Health Services’ (DSHS) Division of Child Support can help parents build a strong foundation for raising happy, healthy children and helping them to reach their full potential.

Each year, DSHS serves approximately 380,000 children in Washington state and across the nation, ensuring they have the financial care they need by collecting more than $670 million a year in child support.

“Child support is a key factor in assisting families get out of poverty,” said DSHS Secretary, Cheryl Strange. “It is important that all kids have the emotional and financial supports from their parents so they can thrive and reach their full potential.”

Governor Jay Inslee has proclaimed August Child Support Awareness Month and this year, DSHS is celebrating with several outreach events where there will be information sharing, resources and treats for parents and children. Among the events scheduled for this month are:

  • In Spokane, DSHS Division of Child Support representatives will be at the event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug. 18 at Riverfront Park.

  • Also in Spokane, there will be Child Support 101 presentation at 5:15 p.m. on Aug. 21 at the downtown Spokane Public Library at 524 S. Stone Street.

  • In Seattle, staff will be at the from 2 to 6 p.m. Aug. 16 at Olympic Hills Elementary, 13018 20th Ave. N.E.
