32nd Annual Washington Prevention Summit takes place Nov. 3-4 in Yakima

OLYMPIA -- The Washington State Prevention Summit returns to Yakima Friday, Nov. 3 through Saturday Nov. 4 at the Yakima Convention Center. This is the 32nd year for this summit.

The Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) sponsors this event in each year to bring together youth, educators, law enforcement, volunteers and providers in an effort to provide training and networking opportunities to prevent substance abuse, violence and other destructive behaviors.

During the summit, DSHS will honor individuals, coalitions and organizations throughout the state for their prevention work. This year’s honorees are:

  • Brian Hunt (Publisher The Walla Walla Union-Bulletin) – Community Prevention Leader Media Sector

  • Deb Drandoff (ESD 112) – Prevention Professional

  • Hannah Stewart – Youth Leadership

  • Jorge Bazaldua (Lower Valley Fitness Club) – Community Prevention Leader Business Sector

  • Dr. Jason Kilmer (University of Washington) – Prevention Professional

  • David Horn (Washington State Office of the Attorney General) – State Agency Partner Law Enforcement

  • Nancy Fiander (Past Coalition Coordinator of White Swan Parks and Recreation Coalition) – Lifetime Achievement Outstanding Contribution to Prevention

  • Kate Ahvakana (Suquamish TribeSports and Recreation Center) – Tribal Community Prevention Leader
