OLYMPIA – The Department of Social and health Services announced today that it has begun screening all visitors to its 24/7 facilities in response to the coronavirus outbreak in Washington state.

“Of course anyone who is not feeling well should postpone visiting any of our facilities or offices,” said Dr. Brian Waiblinger, Chief Medical Officer for DSHS. “Screening of all visitors at our 24/7 facilities is just one of many ways we are working to keep the spread of COVID-19 from our clients and further into our communities.”

The following locations will screen all visitors prior to them being allowed into the facility:

  • Western State Hospital

  • Eastern State Hospital

  • Child Study and Treatment Center

  • Fort Steilacoom Competency Restoration Program Residential Treatment Facility

  • Maple Lane Residential Treatment Facility

  • The Special Commitment Center

  • Rainier School

  • Yakima Valley School

  • Lakeland Village

  • Fircrest School

Visitors will be asked if they have had a fever, cough, shortness of breath, contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19 or if they have traveled internationally within the past two weeks and they will have their temperature taken. If they are running a temperature or answer yes to any of the questions, they will not be allowed to enter into the facility.

“We appreciate everyone’s cooperation during this trying time,” said Waiblinger. “We are doing everything we can to keep this virus from entering into our facilities. Our staff are already carrying out infection-control protocols and this extra step will help us ensure the health and safety of our clients and staff.”

This screening process will remain in place until the risk of coronavirus ceases.
