DSHS is thankful no injuries or fatalities were sustained as a result of this morning’s fire at the Fircrest Residential Habilitation Center in Shoreline. The agency is also grateful to the first responders that rapidly descended on scene to help battle the blaze and ensure all 200 residents and 600 staff remained safe.

“We are amazed by the efforts we saw today from seven different fire department districts and owe them our deepest gratitude,” said Bill Moss, Acting DSHS Secretary. “Thank you to crews from Shoreline, Seattle, Woodinville, Kirkland, Northshore, Bothell and Snohomish for your fast action and bravery.”

At about 8:30 a.m. today, fire alarms sounded and smoke was seen coming from the roof of one of the structures on the 90-acre campus.  Two buildings constructed in 1942 that make up the center’s laundry facility were completely destroyed in the fire. No other buildings were affected and cottages near the fire were evacuated for precautionary measures.

A full investigation to the cause of the fire will be completed by fire experts in the coming days.
