Continuing Education-Using CEs already approved by DSHS

  • CEs already approved by DSHS have an assigned CE approval code.  You can use any CE that has a CE approval code if you:
    • Have permission from the CE owner.
    • Are a DSHS Training Program approved to offer CE and have at least one approved CE instructor.
  • You do NOT have to communicate to DSHS which CEs you are using if:
    • The CE has a CE approval code.
    • You have permission from the CE owner to use it.

Do:

  • Get the CE approval code from the CE owner.

Do NOT:

  • List a CE in a CE Approval form that already has a CE approval code.

Working with the CE Owner

A CE owner is a person or business that has CEs approved by DSHS and will sell or offer them to you to use.  The CE owner should let you know:

  • What CEs they have available including topics, hours, and a brief description of content.
  • Which CEs, if any, can only be taken by RNs/LPNs or Managers.
  • Whether they offer a training certificate template for the CE.  If a certificate is not provided, you must create it. Learn more about documenting CE completion.

Keep in mind that:

  • Any arrangement you make to use the CE is between you and the CE owner – not DSHS. Questions or problems regarding the CE, loss or replacement of materials, updates to the curriculum, or the loss of the DSHS CE approval code must be directed to the business – not DSHS.  DSHS is not responsible for answering or resolving these issues.

There are special policies for using previously approved training materials from other DSHS required courses such as core basic training, specialty training or nurse delegation. Learn more.
